Earlier this year, the release of the popular TV series "North to South" brought new fame to Fangci Town, which served as one of its main filming locations. As the series gained popularity, fans and tourists flocked to the town, leading to an unprecedented surge in visitors. The century-old town, once little known, has now emerged as a vibrant hotspot in cultural tourism.

"To enhance the experience for drama fans and tourists nationwide, we've undertaken extensive restoration work on the town's cultural relics," explained Liu Qingna, Director of the Cultural and Tourism Bureau of Fangzi District in Weifang. "We've also recreated iconic spots such as the Supply and Marketing Cooperative, the first state-run store, a People's Photo Studio, and a vintage train station shop. In addition, we've hosted cultural events like the 2024 Fangci Town National Trend and Intangible Cultural Heritage Festival, as well as the Most Beautiful Ambassador Contest for the town's image." From January to October this year, Fangci Town welcomed over 1.65 million visitors, a staggering increase of more than 1000% compared to previous years.

In the town's picturesque streets, some visitors donned "limited-edition" military coats, qipaos, and other period costumes, strolling through the nostalgic lanes for photo ops that took them back in time. "I never imagined Fangci Town could attract so many people. It feels so lively here it's been ages since we've had this much excitement!" remarked Zhang Lanying, a 90-year-old local, as she watched the bustling crowds and traffic from the station kiosk's bench.

Fangci Town's charm lies in its blend of architectural styles, from German and Japanese buildings to the original Weifang Railway Industrial Corridor, which includes landmarks like the Dejian Train Station and the Jiaoji Railway turntable. The well-preserved coal mining heritage sites, such as the Dejian Mine and the mining tunnels, further add to the town's appeal. These elements not only reflect the town's significant role in the development of modern industry in Shandong but also provide a rich array of settings for film and television productions.

Fangci Town is now an iconic blend of history, culture, and modern tourism, offering visitors a unique window into China's past while creating new memories for the present.
